Reversible male infertility due to sulphasalazine: studies in man and rat.
Sulphasalazine treatment for inflammatory bowel disease in man causes oligospermia, reduced sperm motility and an increased proportion of abnormal forms. On withdrawal of sulphasalazine these effects are found to be reversible and 15 pregnancies occurred at a median of 2.5 months after stopping sulphasalazine therapy. Seminal plasma concentrations of acid phosphatase fructose and PGE2 as well a...

متن کاملReversible Germ Cell Toxicity of Sulphasalazine and Ampicillin Combination in Male Rats
BACKGROUND The antifertility effect of ampicillin (AMP, 40 mg/kg) and sulphasalazine or salicylazosulfapyridine (SASP, 300,450 and 600 mg/kg) in male rats has been reported earlier. The combination of AMP and SASP is generally used in certain pathological conditions, but the combined effect of these two drugs on the fertility is not clear. So, the aim of this study was to investigate the antife...
متن کاملInvestigating the Potential Role of piRNAs in Male Infertility
Infertility is a reproductive-related disorder and different factors account for its development. Male factors contribute to at least 20% of infertility. Despite the efforts performed in this field, the causes often remain idiopathic. Epigenetic factors such as small non-coding RNAs play important functions in male infertility. Also, P-element induced wimpy testis in drosophila-interacting RNAs...

OBJECTIVE To examine the proposal that pretreatment low dose desensitisation may reduce the incidence of toxicity of sulphasalazine in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS A double blind, placebo controlled trial was performed with 422 patients satisfying the American College of Rheumatology criteria for RA who required sulphasalazine treatment because of increased disease acti...
